Taste of the Wild Cat Food Review 2022: Recalls, Pros & Cons
I mixed this Taste of the Wild Prey with their usual food for the first feeding, so it wasn’t a shock to their digestive systems but it was very gentle and was an easy transition. If my pets had allergies or I wanted to remove grain from their diet, I would definitely continue to purchase this product. I received this product complimentary in exchange for an honest review. They are happy and healthy eating it, and I am glad I got them off a cheaper brand.
One developed terrible dander-turns out that both have a chicken allergy. However, the food is a little rich in carbohydrates, and at least one of their ranges includes canola oil, which is a controversial ingredient. Although there haven’t been any in the past few years, Diamond, Taste of the Wild’s parent company, has experienced several product recalls over the years. Dry food, on the other hand, is better for cats that space their meal out over an hour or longer.

Do you offer anything in your line of cat food or can you help me find what I need. I also noted a number of posters stated that their cats got a UTI after initial use. My cats have never experienced this but you should be aware that when switching to a new food item UTI’s are common. Essentially when switching to a new cat food your cats delicate gastrointestinal system is stressed sometimes causing UTIs. Make sure your cat is consuming lots of water when transitioning to a new food. She hasn’t gained/lost a significant amount of weight, but she’s just nice and healthy now.

I’ve been feeding my cats the Canyon River formula for 2+ years with no problems. I did try the Rocky Mountain formula at one point and even with a slow switch, it gave all 4 of them the runs. Not every food is good for every individual animal, so finding a food that all the cats can eat with no problems is sometimes a challenge. It is a lower cost food, but I was impressed with the ingredients.
After three vet visits and one enema I have returned to the previous dry cat food I was feeding. The fibre content in Taste of the Wild is not as high as the previous cat food I used. This food may be good for a young cat, but watch the older ones. I’ve been feeding TOTW Canyon River dry food to 4 of my cats for a year.
However they do a great job for the price and it is fortified well. My cat with a sensitive stomach has not had any difficulties with this food, and he is usually a picky eater. Flavor Selection They have several different kinds, and my cats have like each flavor. The fish-based Rock Mountain canned food combines salmon, smoked salmon, and ocean fish with chicken liver, chicken, and roasted venison meat sources. It also contains potato starch, pea, and several other ingredients that give it a 32% carbohydrate concentration when dry.
Ingredient Quality – 6.5/10
Examples include Pacific Stream Formula, which is based on the ecosystem of the North-Western United States. Taste of the Wild is a relative newcomer to the pet food market, having launched back in 2007. While this might seem like a long time, some of Taste of the Wild’s main competitors have been in business for over 30 years or longer.
Check out the overview of plant proteins and a little further up this page if you haven’t already and let’s take a closer look at the first 5 ingredients. While species-appropriateness and ingredient quality often go hand-in-hand, there are some other factors to consider when it comes to ingredients. Namely, thickening agents and additives that are easy to find in commercial cat food. Taste of the Wild does a solid job avoiding dangerous fillers and was included as our budget option on the list of best cat food without carrageenan.
With 42% protein, this recipe is packed with nutrient-rich energy for cats of all ages. The unique combination of roasted venison and smoke-flavored salmon provide your cat with the proper protein, vital to a lean and healthy body. And we pair that protein blend with legumes, vegetables, fruits and carefully selected ingredients to provide balanced nutrition and a taste cats crave. While most of the dry food recipes from Taste of the Wild provide very similar nutrition, the Wetlands Formula edges out the rest due to its superior protein and fat proportions. The nutrition provided by this formula is ideal for the majority of dogs, including those who are active.
It also has added thiamine mononitrate to help prevent a vitamin B1 deficiency in your cat. At 32% protein, this formula has a slightly lower ratio than that of the Rocky Mountain range but still has a high level of carbs, making up 41% of the dry ingredients. Your pet still shares the DNA of the ancient wild cat.
That cat disappeared about a year ago, but our cats have done better on this food than anything else we’ve ever fed so I continue to buy it and feed it daily. We have 12 cats currently and half of them are over the age of 14. Our oldest is 17 and we have three that are 16…the rest range in age from 15 to 4. Their coats are sleeker and shinier and vomiting went from several times day for one of my house cats to hardly ever on this food.
Hi, my name is Lowell and I have always been interested in animals. I was born with a deep fascination for them that has only grown stronger as I’ve gotten older. This interest has led me to become a zookeeper. It’s the best job in the world because it allows me to work with animals every day and learn more about them.
